The Love Guru

In the comedy “The Love Guru,” Pitka (Mike Myers in his first original character since Austin Powers) is an American who was left at the gates of an ashram in India as a child and raised by gurus. He moves back to the U.S. to seek fame and fortune in the world of self-help and spirituality. His unorthodox methods are put to the test when he must settle a rift between Toronto Maple Leafs star hockey player Darren Roanoke (Romany Malco) and his estranged wife. After the split, Roanoke’s wife starts dating L.A. Kings star Jacques Grande (Justin Timberlake) out of revenge, sending her husband into a major professional skid - to the horror of the teams’ owner Jane Bullard (Jessica Alba) and Coach Cherkov (Verne Troyer). Pitka must return the couple to marital nirvana and get Roanoke back on his game so the team can break the 40-year-old “Bullard Curse” and win the Stanley Cup.

Get Smart

In the all-new action comedy “Get Smart,” Maxwell Smart (Steve Carell) is on a mission to thwart the latest plot for world domination by the evil crime syndicate known as KAOS. When the headquarters of U.S. spy agency Control is attacked and the identities of its agents compromised, the Chief (Alan Arkin) has no choice but to promote his ever-eager analyst Maxwell Smart, who has always dreamt of working in the field alongside stalwart superstar Agent 23 (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson). Given little field experience and even less time, Smart—armed with nothing but a few spy-tech gadgets and his unbridled enthusiasm—must defeat KAOS if he is to save the day.

Trumbo

TRUMBO is the story of screenwriter Dalton Trumbo’s remarkable journey from Hollywood royalty to blacklisted writer to Academy Award winner. Focusing on the writer’s own indelible words, the film features performances of some of his extraordinary letters, clips from his films and, archival and contemporary interviews with those who knew him best. The film illustrates how one man’s unerring belief in the First Amendment and the power of the written word-plus a drink or two-empowered him to fight back after being blacklisted by HUAC. Forced to write underground, letter writing became the chief repository of Trumbo’s extraordinary talents, and they serve as a wonderfully entertaining testament to his boundless intellect, acerbic humor, and staggering resilience.

Finding Amanda

Elsa and Fred

Elsa &Fred is a story about two people who, at the end of the road, discover that it’s never too late to love. or to dream. Elsa is 82 years-old and for the past 60 years she’s dreamt of a moment that Fellini had already envisaged: the scene of “La Dolce Vita” at the Fontana di Trevi. The same scene without Anita Ekberg in it but Elsa instead. Without Marcello Mastroiani but with that love that took so long to arrive. Alfredo is a bit younger than Elsa and was always a good man who did everything he was supposed to do. After losing his wife, he feels disturbed and confused and his daughter decides that it would be best if he moved into a smaller apartment where he’ll meet Elsa. From that moment on, everything changes. Elsa bursts into his life like a whirlwind, determined to teach him that the time he has left to live - be it more or less - is precious and that he should enjoy it as he pleases. Fred surrenders to Elsa’s frenzy, to her youth, to her boldness, to her beautiful madness. And this is how Alfredo (or Fred, as Elsa calls him), learns how to live.

Hancock

Transsiberian

The Longshots

There are certain moments in history when America has proven itself to the world: Neil Armstrong setting foot on the Moon; or the US Men’s Hockey team beating the Soviet Union in the 1980 Olympics. One such moment, however, never got the recognition it deserved: In 1976, a small American winery bested the exalted French wines of the time and sent the wine industry into a tizzy - putting California wines on the map for good. Based on a true story, Bottle Shock chronicles the events leading up to the famous ‘Judgment of Paris’ tastings, told through the lives of father and son, Jim and Bo Barrett. A former real estate attorney, Jim (Bill Pullman) sacrificed everything to realize his dream of creating the perfect hand-crafted chardonnay. His business, however, is struggling, and he’s not only trying to overcome differences with his slacker son (Chris Pine), but is also fighting off the creditors. Meanwhile in Paris, unwitting British wine shop owner Steven Spurrier (Alan Rickman) hopes to revive his own failing business by sponsoring a competition which will pit the traditional French powerhouse against the California upstarts. Red Roses and Petrol

Space Chimps

Space Chimps is an intergalactic comedy that highlights the antics of astronaut chimps with the “wrong stuff.” Ham III (Samberg), the slacker grandson of the first chimp blasted into space before manned spaceflight, joins two other astronaut chimps for a dangerous mission through a black hole to an inhabited planet. When they’re stranded there, the chimps must help the inhabitants rid themselves of a tyrannical leader, and then figure out how to get back to Earth.

I Served the King of England

QUID PRO QUO

Isaac Knott (Nick Stahl) is a Public Radio reporter in New York City. When he was eight, his mother and father died in an automobile accident that left him in a wheelchair. On air, Isaac recounts how he recently received an anonymous tip from someone identified only as “Ancient Chinese Girl.” She tells him a perfectly able-bodied man walked into an emergency ward downtown, and attempted to bribe a doctor into amputating his leg. As Isaac investigates the eerie tip, he encounters Fiona (Vera Farmiga) who, through her own quandary, leads Isaac to a netherworld of people afflicted with a perverse desire to be disabled. Like a contemporary noir detective film, QUID PRO QUO follows Issac as he embarks on a dream-like journey to pull back the layers of what makes people feel whole.

My Winnipeg

Have you ever wanted to relive your childhood and do things differently? Guy Maddin (THE SADDEST MUSIC IN THE WORLD) casts B-movie icon Ann Savage as his domineering mother in attempt to answer that question in MY WINNPEG, a hilariously wacky and profoundly touching goodbye letter to his childhood hometown. A documentary (or “docu-fantasia” as Maddin proclaims) that inventively blends local and personal history with surrealist images and metaphorical myths, the film covers everything from the fire at the local park which lead to a frozen lake of distressed horse heads to pivotal and factually heightened scenes from Maddin’s own childhood, all laced with a startling emotional honesty. MY WINNIPEG is Maddin’s most personal film and a truly unique cinematic experience, winning the best Canadian film at the Toronto International Film Festival and the opening night selection of the Berlin Film Festival’s Forum.

BAGHEAD

While the Duplass Brothers were shooting their last feature film The Puffy Chair, a crew member raised the question “what’s the scariest thing you can think of?” Someone immediately said “a guy with a bag on his head staring into your window.” Some agreed, but some thought it was downright ridiculous and, if anything, funny (but definitely not scary). Thus, BAGHEAD was born, an attempt to take the absurdly low-concept idea of a “guy with a bag on his head” and make a funny, truthful, endearing film that, maybe, just maybe, was a little bit scary, too.

The last mistress

THE LAST MISTRESS marks the monumental pairing of cinema's premiere provocateur, director Catherine Breillat (ROMANCE, FAT GIRL) with the most fearless and explosive actor of our generation, Asia Argento (MARIE ANTOINETTE, BOARDING GATE). Choke

Kicking IT

In the summer of 2006, while the football world's attention was focused on Germany, thousands of players around the globe were training hard and competing to be part of the World Cup...The Homeless World Cup. It began in 2001 as a wild idea by a Scot and an Austrian—to give homeless people a chance to change their lives through an international street soccer competition. Five years later, the annual Homeless World Cup had become an internationally recognized sports competition. 500 homeless players from 48 nations would ultimately be selected to represent their country in Cape Town, South Africa—coming from such disparate parts of the world as war torn Afghanistan, the slums of Kenya, the drug rehab clinics of Dublin, Ireland, the streets of Charlotte, North Carolina, the overflowing public shelters of Madrid, Spain, and the unforgiving city of St. Petersburg, Russia, where the homeless have no rights or identity. Win or lose, for these players it would be the journey of a lifetime. The film follows seven players in their own tough worlds as they confront the daily challenges of life on the streets, battle drug and alcohol addiction, and fight for the right to be recognized as human beings. We witness their struggles, hopes, and determination. The teams are greeted by the South African President, as they make their spirited entrance in to two newly built street soccer "pitches", located at the precise spot where Nelson Mandela was released from prison—with the glorious Table Mountain as the backdrop. Nobel Peace Laureate Desmond Tutu joins the players, declaring homelessness the new "apartheid." For 7 days of fiercely competitive matches, the teams vie for the championship cups. Despite the fact that they may not have a home, the players wear the colors of their country with pride. From shattering misconceptions about the homeless to seeing people living at the edge of society discover that they also can be winners, the film shows in a real and powerful way that sports can and does change lives. As the Russian coach observes, "To me, football is the best model for real life. There is no last game in football and there is no last game in real life. You always have another chance to win."

Take Out

“Take Out” is a day-in-the-life of Ming Ding, an illegal Chinese immigrant working as a deliveryman for a Chinese take-out shop in New York City. Ming is behind with payments on his huge debt to the smugglers who brought him to the US. The collectors have given him until the end of the day to deliver the money that is due. After borrowing most of the money from friends and relatives, Ming realizes that the remainder must come from the day’s delivery tips. In order to do so, he must make more than double his average daily income. Employing an ensemble cast of both professional and nonprofessional actors, and filmed in an actual take-out restaurant during operating hours, directors Sean Baker and Shih-Ching Tsou utilize a cinema vérité style to paint a distinctly human face on the lives of illegal immigrants lost in the shadows of an uncaring city.

MONGOL

Award-winning Russian filmmaker Sergei Bodrov (PRISONER OF THE MOUNTAINS) illuminates the life and legend of Genghis Khan in his stunning historical epic, MONGOL. Based on leading scholarly accounts and written by Bodrov and Arif Aliyev, MONGOL delves into the dramatic and harrowing early years of the ruler who was born as Temudgin in 1162. As it follows Temudgin from his perilous childhood to the battle that sealed his destiny, the film paints a multidimensional portrait of the future conqueror, revealing him not as the evil brute of hoary stereotype, but as an inspiring, fearless and visionary leader. MONGOL shows us the making of an extraordinary man, and the foundation on which so much of his greatness rested: his relationship with his wife, Borte, his lifelong love and most trusted advisor.

Miss Conception

Georgina Scott (Heather Graham) is a broody 33 year-old, who sends her boyfriend, Zak, (Tom Ellis) packing when it has become apparent that he doesn’t share her desire for a bundle of joy. Zak sets off on a documentary shoot and hopes that she’ll cool off in his absence. But Georgina discovers that early menopause runs in her family and heads for a specialist with her reluctant best friend, Clem (Mia Kirshner, The L Word), in tow. Learning that her baby making days are numbered, Georgina enlists Clem and their camp pal, Justin (Orlando Seale), to make the most of it. A battle plan is drawn up but their escapades become increasingly frantic as Georgina explores internet sperm donors, night clubbers, a love struck co-worker and funeral-goers in her desperate and hilarious attempts to beat the biological clock.

Sex and the City

Sex and the City is coming to the big screen in a feature film adaptation of the hit HBO television series. The film will follow the continuing adventures of the series four main characters - Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda - as they live their lives in Manhattan four years after the series ended. Stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis, and Cynthia Nixon are all on board to reprise their roles, while the film will be written and directed by Michael Patrick King, who executive produced the original television series. Additionally, Chris Noth, David Eigenberg, Evan Handler and Jason Lewis will return as the women’s love interests. Academy Award-winning actress Jennifer Hudson (Dreamgirls) has also joined the cast of the film and will play Carrie Bradshaw’s assistant, a new character to be introduced in the film. Sex and the City is scheduled for a May 30th release.

Kung Fu Panda

DreamWorks Animation once again produces a computer animated film that contains topnotch animation, plenty of comedy, and recognizable celebrity voices. Kung Fu Panda also has a generous helping of heart, and Jack Black's voice performance manages to be exceedingly entertaining instead of generally annoying, as some of his live action routines tend to become. With martial arts action, adventure, and jokes for both children and adults, Kung Fu Panda is worthwhile family entertainment.

"There is no charge for awesomeness," states the all-powerful Panda warrior Po, as he dreams about fighting droves of enemies and defending his home, the Valley of Peace, with unmatchable martial arts skills and esprit de corps with his battling companions, the Furious Five. But when he awakes, Po (Jack Black) is nothing more than a clumsy and overweight panda noodle vendor who is destined to serve the valley the finest meals with his father (who is a goose). Po yearns to learn kung fu and help save his people by doing battle against all who threaten their way of life, but as his father continually reminds him, it is not his destiny.

Fortunate circumstances change everything one day when Po journeys into the city to watch the sage Master Oogway finally choose the legendary Dragon Warrior, prophesied to defeat the vile Tai Lung, a rogue warrior who has been locked away for years. The candidates are the legendary Tigress (Angelina Jolie), Monkey (Jackie Chan), Mantis (Seth Rogen, who seems to be in every animated film this year), Viper (Lucy Liu), and Crane (David Cross). When Po accidentally crashes into the arena via fireworks strapped to a wooden chair, Oogway pronounces the unconscious panda as the mighty Dragon Warrior. Shocked and thrilled, Po joins the five skeptical warriors in the Jade Palace as they train to battle Tai Lung, who recently escaped from an inescapable prison stronghold. But the greatest kung fu teacher Shifu (Dustin Hoffman) is outraged at Oogway's decision to leave the city in the hands of the unskilled panda. It will take everything in Po's power to live up to the designation bestowed upon him, and to prove that even a chubby lummox can master the martial arts.

Kung Fu Panda is another technically superior achievement for DreamWorks Animation, utilizing some of the best computer graphics and animators available. The movements, textures, fur/hair, backgrounds, and lighting are impressively realistic, even though the character designs themselves are largely cartoonish. But those designs are also outstanding, demonstrating a great sense of humor with Shifu's tiny mouse, Oogway's quivering turtle, Po's roly-poly panda, and even background characters such as a pig with five o'clock shadow. Going hand-in-hand with the hilarious character designs is the editing, which oftentimes mocks anime and martial arts films, and starts off in stylized 2-D animation during Po's dream sequence.

Gathering together a large ensemble cast of recognizable voices, for once the numerous celebrities don't detract from the film. Jack Black is nearly perfect as Po, who one might imagine as Black in a panda suit. Unlike this year's Horton Hears a Who remake in which Jim Carrey and Steve Carell's voices overshadowed their characters to the point of unrecognizable, Po is believable just as he is. Hoffman and the many supporting characters also deliver appropriately subtle performances that don't take the viewers attention away from the animated exploits onscreen.

Although the re-watching value might be slim for adults, and the underdog tale is understandably generic, Kung Fu Panda packs a punch with its traditional martial arts mix of fast-paced action, way-too-powerful villains, destinies, legends, prophecies, and killer kung fu moves. And to top it all off is constant comedy (albeit immature, "a kick to the tenders" comedy) that is sure to provoke chuckles from everyone.
